Gruene Door Brunch of Gruene TX

Chicken tenders ... what makes them great is the rum syrup.  The Gruene Door Restaurant serves brunch only on Sundays, but the make up for it by serving brunch until close.  This is elegant dining with gourmet dishes.

The Gruene Door Restaurant is located on Gruen Lake Drive just off of Gruene Road near Commons in New Braunfels.  If you're not from this area, consult your GPS.  Brunch is worth the drive from San Antonio or San Marcus, or for a stop on the way north to Austin, Dallas, or Fort Worth.  I've always have been able to get a table on Sunday without a wait.

Coffee:

Both regular and decaf are great blends.  Brewed perfectly, strong, but not bitter.  Perhaps not for you who are Texas tea lovers.

Shrimp & Grits:

A half dozen jumbo shrimp lightly fried are served on cheddar grits.  The dish is topped with a mushroom, tomato, and bacon sauce.  This is really good.  On my bucket list is the pulled pork and cheese grits.  Shrimp and grits are a New Orleans dish, but the Gruene Door is one of two north New Braunfels places that do wonders with this recipe.

Chicken & Waffles:

My girlfriend asked for this dish, but she let me taste it.  The chicken tenders are breaded and deep fried; then placed on top of a crisp waffle.  A special rum syrup is poured on top of the chicken before serving.  See that small stainless pitcher at one o'clock on the plate.  There's more of that rum syrup in there.  The waiter gave me a small serving take home.  It went on vanilla ice cream.  Yum!

Chorizo Scramble:

Three eggs are scrambled with chunks of Mexican chorizo and served on a bed of roasted potatoes.  The potatoes are chopped small and end up crisp.  The dish is topped with jack cheese and those crisp strips of whatever.  The item is served with pico de gallo which I poured on top.

Crabcake Benedict:

This place could be in New Orleans, but it's not.  It's in Gruene.  Two crab cakes are served with poached egg.  All of this is covered with hollandaise sauce and jalapeno pesto.  It's served with roasted potatoes and sautéed spinach.

Bucket List Items:

  • Spanish Omelet with poblano sausage
  • Smoked pulled pork and cheddar grits covered with a jalapeno cream dish.
