Earl Abels of San Antonio





Earl Abel's was a mainstay restaurant on Broadway and Hilderbrand for years.  Property values and interests changed, so the family sold the restaurant and the property.  The new owners moved the facility to Old Austin Highway.  No more grilled biscuits, but the biscuits are larger.  


You can get to Earl Abel's from the I-410 Loop near I-35.  Take ____ to Old Austin Highway.  Or come in from Broadway where the Old Austin Highway intersects, just north of Hilderbrand.  This place is fixing to move in October.  When it does, I'll update you.



Venison Sausage & Eggs:


A sausage choice on the menu is venison.  Great sausage taste, just enough pork mix.  Thick grits were substituted for hashbrowns.  And look at that biscuit.



Chicken-Fried Steak & Eggs:


Chicken-fried steak and cream gravy.  Doesn't get any better than that.  And I love scrambled eggs and hashbrowns with ketchup on them.  First tasted that combo when I stopped for breakfast with my father who announced that he hated seeing ketchup on any breakfast dish.  Being a teenager at the time, I had to try this, and when I was able to make it past the spite, I really enjoyed the taste.  Now when I get my scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, I have to have ketchup on them.




Bacon & Eggs:


Look at that thick bacon.  My girlfriend Jewell ordered this plate (or there would have been a biscuit instead of wheat toast).  Great hickory smoked taste to the bacon.


Thin Pancakes & Pan Sausage:



Abel's serves up both thin and thick pancakes which is great because most of us fall in one of the two camps.  My guess is that the majority like their pancakes thick.  I like mine thin.  I load them up with butter and enjoy with sausage until the meat runs out.  Then I pour on the maple syrup for desert.
