Breakfast in Terlingua At the Chili Cookoff

Look at that bean-n-cheese burrito!  That's breakfast in Terlingua at the annual Chili Cook Off.  Thanks goes to my cousins Sharon and Bob for inviting me to Terlingua.

Nig's Kitchen:

A Hispanic family runs Nig's Kitchen for the annual cook off in late October.  No tacos, but huge burritos instead.  Come hungry or share!  They have only three kinds of burrito, but all three are great.

Sausage-n-Egg:

This is an old favorite of mine, breakfast sausage cooked into scrambled eggs.  See the melted cheese!

Bacon-n-Egg:

They do the same thing with bacon, but this one has no cheese.  Sad....

Bean-n-Cheese:

This one is my favorite at Nig's ... bean-n-cheese.  One of these can last until a late afternoon lunch.

Huge Cinnamon Rolls from Boerne, TX:

Man does not live by burritos alone.  I trucked into Terlingua what some people think are the world's greatest cinnamon rolls ... cinnamon rolls from the Bear-Moon Bakery in Boerne, TX.  If you're rolling down I-10 north of San Antonio, stop in at the Bear-Moon Bakery for some of their sweet rolls.  The car might get trashed, but the pallet will be happy you made the stop.  My cousins and friends were still eating them two days after I arrived.

Home-Made Barbacoa:

I also trucked in some home-made barbacoa for tacos.  My cousins and friends didn't join me in that feast.  Some people would rather eat the butt of a cow than the cheek meat.  In another posting, I'll show you how Gringos (and many Tex-Mex restaurants) cook cheek meat down into barbacoa.  By the way, the recipe works with brisket as well.

Dry Dust Terlingua:

Expect to get dust everywhere on your clothes when in Terlingua.  See my shoes, those were dark brown before the dry dust of West Texas coated them.  Bathing facilities are in the campsite next door to the contest.  Standing with me is my pardner Jewell.
